The African leg of the Olympic Torch which passed through Dar es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, was overshadowed by the withdrawal of Wangari Maathai, Kenyan ecologist, first African woman to win with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Wangari Maathai is an ecologist and a well-known human rights activist. She gave up her position at the University of Nairobi in order to dedicate herself to politics, and continued her struggle for democracy and human rights. In December 2002, Professor Maathai was elected to th Kenyan Parliament by an overwhelming 98% of the vote. She was subsequently appointed by the President of Kenya as Assistant Minister for the Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife in Kenya's ninth parliament district.
