Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), in his best-known works The Prince (Il Principe), The Discourses and art of War, outlines a theory of “raison d’état” and of “real politik”. Whereby the use of any technique is permissible so long as it achieves the desired end. Associated with a cynical, pessimistic view of politics and international relations, it is often and incorrectly identified with the realist view with which it shares family resemblance.
