It’s somewhat apt that Ubuntu’s ‘Lenses’ feature has brought Unity into clearer focus for many of its initial critics. The search-orientated display windows – called ‘Lenses’ – make finding specific files, apps or information easy to do thanks to their tuned ‘search backends’ – called Scopes’. Below are 10 of the best Lenses and Scopes available for Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot” and Ubuntu 12.04 “Precise Pangolin”. Before going any further you will need to add the following ‘Super Lens’ PPA to your Software Sources so you can take advantage of the ‘one click install’ buttons used in this article. Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy: disponibili le Daily Build -
Ad una settimana esatta dal rilascio di Ubuntu 13.04 Raring gli sviluppatori Canonical hanno già iniziato lo sviluppo della nuova release Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy rilasciando già le daily build. Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy è una release molto attesa dagli utenti e sopratutto un banco di prova per gli sviluppatori in vista dell'attesissima 14.04 LTS la quale porterà definitivamente Unity sia su pc desktop che su smartphone e tablet grazie al progetto Unity Touch. La nuova Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy introdurrà molto probabilmente il nuovo Unity Next ambiente desktop scritto in QT/QML che avrà comunque la stessa esperienza utente della versione precedente basata su window manager Compiz il quale verrà completamente rimosso dalla distribuzione. Unity Smart Scopes aggiunge il supporto per nuovi siti e una migliore gestione dal Dash -
Smart Scopes è una nuova funzionalità, sviluppata da Canonical, con la quale è possibile effettuare contemporaneamente ricerche mirate in più siti ed applicazioni il tutto direttamente dal Dash. Il nuovo Unity Smart Scopes doveva approdare di default in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring ma visto i tanti bug riscontrati il team di sviluppo ha deciso di rimandare il rilascio per la prossima Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy. Tra le principali caratteristiche degli Unity Smart Scopes troviamo la possibilità di scegliere quali siti effettuare la ricerca online direttamente dal Dash inoltre le nostre ricerche andranno ad interagire solo con il server Canonical in maniera anonima e criptata. Gli sviluppatori Canonical in questi giorni hanno introdotto nuove ed interessanti novità riguardanti gli Smart Scope. Ubuntu 13.10 e le idee su Unity Smart Scopes -
Negli ultimi mesi gli sviluppatori Canonical hanno lavorato molto sul nuovo progetto Unity Smart Scopes, la nuova funzionalità che doveva approdare di default in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring e poi rimandata alla release successiva vista l'instabilità riscontrata e i diversi bug ancora da risolvere. Unity Smart Scopes è una funzionalità con la quale possiamo effettuare ricerche mirate in molti siti web e applicazioni che supportano questo servizio direttamente dal Dash. E' possibile, ad esempio, effettuare ricerche su un'artista preferito, su Wikipedia, su YouTube, su Grooveshark, Rdio oppure Spotify per cercare brani correlati all'artista, oppure ancora cercare file audio presenti nel nostro pc e online attraverso Rhythmbox (o altro player per Linux), tutto questo con pochi click del mouse e senza avviare né applicazioni né browser. Canonical has released Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, most likely the last release of Ubuntu that will primarily cater for laptop and desktop users. For Ubuntu 13.04, Canonical focused on tightening up the core of the OS and polishing the Unity interface in preparation for Ubuntu’s smartphone and tablet debut, which is slated to occur in October with the release of version 13.10. There’s also the usual slew of package updates, a new Linux kernel, and a couple of new features, too.The first thing you’ll notice upon booting Raring Ringtail is that Unity, and the PC in general, is faster and more responsive. This is down to Canonical putting a lot of time and effort into tweaking Ubuntu’s core libraries, to reduce the CPU and memory usage of system processes, resulting in a snappier interface (Unity) and installed apps.
